New People(1746 Post Street) will bea 20,000 square foot Japanese pop culture mall in San Francisco’s Japantown set to open on Summer 2009. The fashion brands will be located on the second floor of the building while the first floor will feature a café, the mezanine a pop heaven and the third floor a gallery for emerging artists that draw their inspiration from Japanese popular culture.[The building’s basement will house a cinema, the only one in the US primarily dedicated to Japanese films, documentaries and anime]. The NEW PEOPLE building, now under construction, will feature a striking 3-floor transparent glass façade bringing a futuristic look to this historic area in San Fransisco. It is one of only three Japantowns still surviving in the US.

These will be the first permanent stores that Baby, The Stars Shine Bright and Black Peace Now will open in the United States while  6%DOKIDOKI and SOU • SOU are not opening permanent stores and are part of a short-term rotating program.

The opening of Japanese “street fashion mall” in the United States is really interesting and I am particularly excited to see how these East Bay youth adopt and continue to customize these trends. While Japanese street fashions are a mixture of east and west, I have a feeling its going to birth an entirely new sub genre once mixed with a group of differently influenced youth.
